"Checkered Flag: The Tragic Tale of Ratts Tyerell" is a short story written by Admiral Byzantium and Dr. McKay. It was first published on November 6, 2024[1] as the sixteenth story from Tales from the Boonta Eve Classic. It is the twentieth story in the print release of the anthology.[3]

Ratts Tyerell was one of many pod racers at the Boonta Eve Classic. His death had long lasting consequences for his family and the galaxy.[2]
Plot summary
Ratts Tyerell's untimely demise at the Boonta Eve Classic left his family in ruin.[2] Swindled by the Hutts, the manufacturer of Ratts' pod, and a lawyer, his widow, Deles, and her three children, Deland, Djulla, and Doby are left destitute on Tatooine. Deles reaches out to her brother-in-law, Rysui Tyerell, on the planet Euceron. He agrees to furnish the family with an apartment, though not without a price. He finds "jobs" for Deland and Djulla. However, their work is little more than slave labor, and all of their wages go toward paying the rent on the apartment Rysui provided. Later, Rysui sells Djulla to Sebulba as a slave. Overwhelmed with stress, Deles dies and orphans the three children.[2]
After his mother's death, Deland starts lobbying for a ban on podracing. He forms the Ratts Tyerell Foundation on Denon, and petitions his cause to anyone in the Republic government who may listen.[2] His younger brother, Doby, pursues a career as a podracer. The two become estranged after a heated exchange regarding their father's legacy. The scoop on the Tyerells and the Foundation is picked up by Coruscanti editor Venka Samsach.
After Doby abandons a podrace to thwart an attempt on Deland's life, the brothers reconcile. After almost two decades of relentless lobbying, Deland's petition is picked up by the Imperial Senate, and a ban on podracing is codified into law under Imperial Decree S-CI-5403.101.256.[2]
