Wan Sandage is on the brink of death, but he has one last challenge to get through before the end.

Plot summary

Wan Sandage is on his deathbed and in the throes of senility. Having reached almost ten years of age, he is exceptionally venerable for a Devlikk. As he traverses the Maze of the Mind, Sandage encounters memories from his past, among them the rest of his nest denouncing him as a "loser", his repeated attempts to collude with Aldar Beedo in order to assassinate Sebulba, and the birth of his son. The last memory of his son is enough to push Sandage out of the maze and into the light, and he dies in peace.

Behind the scenes

According to C.M.S. III, "ninety percent" of the dialogue in this short story was lifted from the webcomic Podracing Tales and issues #14, #15, and #16 of the 1998 Star Wars comic series.

In his first dealing with Aldar Beedo, Sandage directly references the assassination of Borzu Nale, Kam Nale's father, tying into "Drive for Revenge: Elan Mak's Tale."
