"Sense of Self: The Myth of Xelbree" is a short story written by Ad Absurdeum. It was first published on November 11, 2024 on AO3 as the twentieth story from Tales from the Boonta Eve Classic.[1] It is the eleventh story in the print release of the anthology.[2]
The short story centers around the podracer Xelbree, and their[notes 1] attempt to figure out who they really are.
Plot summary
Xelbree is a Shi'ido[3] thrill-seeker who has a past in organized crime. After organizing the mass slaughter of several crime lords on Dantooine and nearly getting killed in the process, Xelbree is left fractured—physically and mentally. Xelbree is unable to return to their original form and builds several false identities with corresponding memories. These fragmented personas prevent the Shi'ido from shifting back to their "original self" and from finding out who they really are.[3]
After visiting a doctor on Corellia, Xelbree learns that the only way to find their true self is by skirting close to death.[3]. They take up podracing to pursue this goal. During each race, Xelbree gains a moment of clarity that pushes them closer to discovering their true identity. However, they always fall just shy of cracking the code. Each of these instances leads to a violent crash, which leaves Xelbree's physical body more broken than before.[3]
At the Boonta Eve Classic on Tatooine, Xelbree achieves finally oneness before crashing into a rock wall and dying.[3]
