How does Clegg Holdfast get his inside scoops for the Podracing Quarterly? Some say it's because he has his ear to the engines, being a racer himself. Some even think he is some kind of telepath. They're both right, in a way: when he goes really fast, almost beyond his species’ acceleration tolerance, Clegg sometimes literally ends up in someone else's mind...[4]
Plot summary
Clegg Holdfast is a star reporter for Podracing Quarterly.[2] Born with a compulsion for thrill-seeking, Holdfast enjoys participating in the races as well. In addition to being up close and personal to his potential stories, the sheer speed of podracing triggers an innate gift in Holdfast's mind: the ability to read the thoughts of others. Over the course of the Boonta, he learns that Aldar Beedo has been hired to kill Sebulba[2]; that "Elan Mak" is actually the alias of Kam Nale, who is trying to kill Beedo[2][5]; that Eela Valotta is leading other slaves away from the arena, right under the noses of the Hutts[2]; and that there are multiple Jedi present on Tatooine[2]. Eventually, he is also able to pinpoint the thoughts of Darth Maul, and has a premonition of galactic domination spurred by the Sith.[2] As Holdfast attempts to process this stream of information, Sebulba purposely crashes his pod.[2]
Holdfast wakes up in the medcenter, unable to recall most of his earlier premonition. As he comes to grips with the futility of his memory, Dud Bolt approaches, and Holdfast propositions him for an interview.[2]
