"Nice Guys Finish Last: Sebulba's Tale" is a short story written by Nick Schuessler. It was first published on AO3 on November 2, 2024[1] as the twelfth story from Tales from the Boonta Eve Classic. It is the fourteenth story in the print release of the anthology.[3]
Plot summary
After his loss to Anakin Skywalker eight years ago, Sebulba is bitter and retired.[2] Living with his son and grandson, Sebulba holds a grudge against his son for also losing to Skywalker. One night, the family is visited by a hooded man who, through a mind trick, convinces Sebulba to challenge Skywalker to a rematch.[2]
Sebulba journeys to Coruscant and arranges a meeting with Skywalker, now a Jedi, and his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The meeting devolves into name-calling, and is interrupted by Rylothi senator Orn Free Taa and Oliar journalist Fayd Wharod. Taa proposes a podrace to be held in the Outer Rim to usher in a "new era of podracing"[2], bolstered by enhanced safety regulations sponsored by special interest groups. After Kenobi shoots down the idea of racing on Tatooine, Taa decides to host the race on Ryloth.[2] Before the race, Hekula meets with Skywalker and Kenobi and gifts the former back his old podracer. Meanwhile, Sebulba attempts to claim back his former slaves, the Gella sisters; however, both pelt him with rocks and their new owner, who has since set them free, holds him at gunpoint.[2]
During the race, Sebulba's pod catches fire due to faulty parts supplied by Offworld Mining Corporation.[2] Skywalker chooses to save him by linking both their pods together by the fuel lines. After severing their turbines, Skywalker and Sebulba's cockpits both cross the finish line, with Sebulba just narrowly ahead.
Sebulba awakes in a medbay with his son, Skywalker, and Kenobi. As the Jedi depart, Sebulba gives Skywalker a backhanded compliment, signaling an end to their grudge. As he drifts off to sleep, Sebulba reminds Hekula to never podrace and contemplates starting a new podracing team on the upcoming Coruscant circuit.[2]
