Biography
The death of the Emperor
When Palpatine returned to life as a clone on Byss eight months after the Battle of Endor, Carnor Jax felt his presence through the dark side of the Force. At the time, Jax was stationed outside the doors to the Imperial Sanctum in Coruscant's Imperial Palace. There, he was confronted by the former Emperor's Hand Sarcev Quest, who had come to see Sate Pestage inside the sanctum, and the two men established a silent understanding that they both knew and were disturbed by the Emperor's return.[2]
For much of 5 ABY, Jax and Quest conspired to remove various obstacles to their own goal of gaining power in the Empire. During their planning sessions, they frequently got drunk with the aim of scrambling their thoughts enough to obscure them from either Palpatine or the Prophets of the Dark Side. Quest would then make cryptic notes about their plans before helping Jax purge both the alcohol and the memories of these sessions. On one such occasion, Jax revealed to Quest that Lumiya had taken him on as an apprentice; when Quest later told him to enlist Lumiya's help in eliminating the Prophets of the Dark Side, Jax was surprised that Quest knew about their relationship.
In order to confuse the Prophets' foresight, Jax and Lumiya went through a list of putative enemies of the Supreme Prophet Kadann at random, and then invited or manipulated these enemies into killing various beings who pretended or believed to be Kadann. One such enemy of Kadann's was King Nefta, who lived in exile on Odacer-Faustin since Kadann had told the Emperor that Nefta would one day try to assassinate him and usurp his throne. When Carnor Jax and Lumiya confronted him, Nefta isolated Jax for a short while and offered him wine from the Dreaming Vineyard of Bosthirda, which allowed them to communicate telepathically without anyone noticing. Nefta then agreed to help hunt down Kadann, on the condition that they take him to Palpatine on Byss afterwards. After killing a woman whom Lumiya had convinced she was Kadann, Nefta revealed that the Prophets were hiding on Bosthirda.
Lumiya passed the information about the Prophets' hiding place on to Grand Admiral Afsheen Makati, and she and Jax then traveled to Bosthirda aboard the Revenant. There, they observed Makati attempt an attack on the planet using a bombardment line, which failed because Bosthirda's moon had been blown up on Kadann's orders and the Dreaming Vineyard, which was allied with the Prophets, threw Makati's torpedos back at his Torpedo Sphere, causing Makati to retreat with the rest of his force. However, Kadann's former student Azrakel reached Bosthirda along with the boy Ken, and with Ken's help Azrakel managed to injure the Prophet Jedgar and behead Kadann, who burst Azrakel's heart using the Force before he died. Taking a Pacifier-class assault boat to the planet, Jax and Lumiya killed off the vines around the Prophets' temple using defoliant spray and then landed next to the dying Azrakel. Jax cut off Azrakel's hand on which he wore the Glove of Darth Vader; then he and Lumiya went into the temple to kill the rest of the Prophets, leaving Ken behind to say farewell to Azrakel. When they returned after having eradicated the Prophets, Ken had stolen their ship and they had to call Revenant's captain Valek for extraction.
Jax then accompanied Lumiya and Nefta to Byss, where Lumiya gifted the Glove of Darth Vader to Palpatine, allowing him to complete the Kaan Heptad. On Byss, Jax reflected that this was the true center of power in the galaxy, and considered working to become a Sovereign Protector. When Jax and Lumiya returned to Byss some time later, Jax began undergoing the acceptance test for becoming a Sovereign Protector, while Lumiya and Nefta each were given an amulet from the Kaan Heptad and used by Palpatine to compel the obedience of all darksiders in the galaxy. Jax was fighting a chrysalis rancor in a pit next to the Imperial Citadel when the compulsion struck. Remembering the plan to kill Palpatine that he had hatched together with Quest, Jax desperately attempted to climb up the Citadel tower and warn Palpatine; but it was too late, and Byss' sun exploded. By the time Jax reached the Citadel's throne room level, Palpatine had succeeded in containing the supernova using the powers available to him through the Kaan Heptad, but when Lumiya had broken out of the Heptad with Nefta's help, Palpatine had died from the exertion, breaking the compulsion.[2] On Nefta's mental prompting, Jax tackled Lumiya when she fled the throne room, and Lumiya secretly told him to stay on Byss, make sure that all of Palpatine's clones were dead, and find out what he could, before injuring Jax with her lightwhip and fleeing the planet.[3]
In the aftermath of Palpatine's death, Jax accompanied Mas Amedda, Nefta, and several other darksiders into the subterranean levels of the Citadel. Jax was sent ahead into a room that had been partly flooded when some of the creatures being bred there had broken out of their cages. In addition to numerous tadpoles which Nefta told him were Amedda's attempts to create engineered offspring, Jax found a dying clone of the Zillo Beast and detected the presence of the Constable of Homunculi Borborygmus Gog in a closed locker, where he left him on Nefta's advice. When the door to the cloning levels was opened, Jax and the others found all clones of Palpatine dead, having broken out of their tanks and died in a mindless scrabble to get out and support their dying master.[3]
