Biography
War on Kalee
Qymaen and Ronderu were divided on their opinions of technology. Ronderu embraced the primitive, using Lig Swords to great effect, while Qymaen accepted use of his Czerka Outland Rifle as a necessity in order to win.[2]
In the Shadows
Grievous described waiting behind the scenes for the first four months of the Clone Wars as some of the hardest for him. On Hypori, he met Chiv Dol during this span.[2]
Early-War Successes
Following the Battle of Nadiem (5 ABG), Grievous went on a winning streak, never losing a single battle until the Battle of Bandomeer (14 ABG). However, the Separatist strategy droid B9-Z4 pointed out that Grievous possessed vast numerical advantages in these engagements and claimed that an average commander could have achieved similar results.[2]
During the early war, he used the Huakil as his headquarters and flagship. In 14 months, 6 days ABG, Grievous commanded the Separatist attack on Obroa-skai, raiding its Obroan Galactic Observatory in the city of Qorik.[2] He left within a day.[2] Not long after, his fleet was spotted in the Carest System and believed to be headed into the neutral Sumitra Sector.[2]
Around this time, he ordered his wheelbike to be modified on Botajef, replacing the passenger seat with a laser cannon. The modifications were not completed as quickly as he hoped, and he was unable to get it back before the Battle of Bandomeer.[2]
Besieged on Bandomeer
- "You do manage to get yourself into quite the messes."
- ―Chiv Dol
Around 14 months, 18 days ABG, Grievous's forces were defeated by Sadiya Keldon at Bandomeer, costing him the Huakil and trapping him in the small town of Selbar, with Republic forces on all sides. Grievous blamed Admiral Veem and the Babteer Pil for these losses.[2] The battle frustrated him, and he struggled with being unable to personally fight the Republic.[2] He relocated his headquarters to the Demask, which was also battle-damaged and sitting in Selbar. In 14 months, 29 days, he ratted out a group of Feeorin mercenaries hired by the Republic to infiltrate Selbar.[2] The battle cost him some damage to his arms as well as MagnaGuards IG-122 and IG-121.[2]
In 15 months, 15 days, right after being repaired from his previous bout, he left Selbar for the first time since the initial battle, believing that he could hunt down Republic High General Sadiya Keldon and her newfound ally Kuallue while they were away from camp.[2] His speeders broke through Republic lines to the west and attacked Hotel 4, where the two were at, but Kuallue used powerful telekinetic attacks to take out several STAPs and crash Grievous's Arrow-21 Landspeeder. Kuallue then commandeered a STAP, so Grievous took over one as well to pursue, all while General Keldon was able to hide from his forces and stay alive. Grievous chased Kuallue, ultimately succeeding in bringing down his quarry, but taking extensive damage in the process and exposing his STAP to the sight-line of a V-19 Torrent. The V-19 quickly shot down Grievous, who lost his legs, had his arms disabled, and was at Kuallue's mercy. Ultimately, Kuallue abandoned Grievous to be captured by the arriving Republic forces, but Grievous was able to hide in Lake Nilseen before they arrived and send out a call for help. Grievous went unconscious shortly thereafter, but he was pulled out of the lake in a rescue mission launched by TeenPat. A Vulture Droid then carried him to safety.[2]
Recovery
- "There are no draws in war. You win or you lose."
- ―-Grievous
Grievous spent time in the Pablir Regional Medical Center on life support while Chiv Dol attempted to repair his cybernetics, which were removed from his body for the repairs. Grievous was also left naked without his armored plates.[2] Meanwhile, the Palti of Babteer Pil, WanThir, critiqued Grievous's overconfidence.[2] By day 18, Grievous was in stable condition, but damages to his NDS Converters meant that he would be unable to control most of his limbs, even if the motors were repaired or replaced.[2]
He taught the General using the Meerian sport of Beezfitrar as an analogy, and explained that in warfare is necessary to be patient and cut one's losses.[2] Grievous was not a fan of WanThir's approach, but his recent failures and desperation to survive made him ultimately willing to listen, and he eventually even came to enjoy the sport.[2]
By the 26th day of the war, Grievous was out of the hospital, using a repulsorlift chair to get around while relying on his one working arm to control it. His legs and other other arm still could not attach due to lack of NDS Converters.[2]
Endgame
Grievous was able to command Separatist forces when Kuallue and the Republic took the Valmin Water Treatment Facility. He attacked to seize it back, but once he realized that it was not feasible and would cost hundreds of droids, he decided to destroy it instead, forcing the Republic to get out of Selbar the way they came, through an underground tunnel and a well. However, the Republic still had already succeeded in their primary objective of poisoning the water supply and destroying the filtration equipment, forcing the Babteer Pil to rely exclusively on imported bottles that had arrived on the Venture. As such, it forced the Separatist command to accelerate their plans, with only about one week of water left.[2]
On the 2nd day of month 16 ABG, the Republic launched their final attack, which started with AT-TE Walkers climbing up the cliff toward Selbar's east wall and also included intentionally crashed gunships to destroy the wall so that walkers could breach the shield. Grievous sent WanThir, LilVas, and his decoy to lead their forces in countering the threat, while he remained personally aboard their command center in the Demask. Later, he heard that Kuallue had been able to sneak into the town and board the Venture, so he sent his decoy and a dozen B2 Super Battle Droids to stop him after the battle on the east side wound down. Grievous and IG-124 went to focus on guarding the main shield generator in the center of the town, which was attacked around the same time by Sadiya Keldon herself alongside two Republic Commandos. Grievous killed the clones, but Sadiya was able to sneak inside of his defenses, engage him and IG-124 in a brief duel, and ultimately set off a bomb to destroy the generator, leaving Selbar undefended. However, she didn't want to be caught in the blast, so she had ordered the Kalpana not to destroy the city center.[2]
Fleeing Selbar
Grievous ordered the Separatists to mobilize, activating shields on the Demask, launching Vulture Droids and a variety of ships owned by Babteer Pil, and attacking the Grand Army below them on the east side of the city. The clones tried to escape down the cliffside, but Grievous and WanThir had devised "Protocol Met," which involved blasting the top part of the cliff to cause a rockslide, decimating the Clone Troopers and their walkers. Grievous also had has decoy try to escape aboard a Sheathipede-class Shuttle. It was pursued by Kuallue, who telepathically ordered the Kalpana to capture it in a tractor beam. The decoy wreaked havoc aboard the Kalpana, thanks also to several Colicoid Infiltrator-series Droids that Grievous activated.[2]
The chaos on the Kalpana proved to Grievous's advantage when he moved his troops onto the plain below and tried to take camp aurek. In response, a large clone army massed between them and the camp, but Grievous activated a holographic projection of the Demask placed it between the Kalpana and the clone armies. With the blinded battlecruiser unable to see the difference, turbolaser blasts descended upon the fake frigate, going straight through it and onto the clone army. This made a clear path for Grievous to march all of his troops directly into camp aurek and begin siezing the starships. Grievous led from the front, personally boarding the Micah Giiett alongside IG-124 and a half-dozen Babteer Pil. There, he encountered Nan Latourain, but she was killed by IG-124.[2]
Grievous then used his newly acquired ship to attack and eventually destroy the Kalpana, thus freeing the way for the Separatists to flee the planet. However, he was feeling confident and instead decided to stand and fight against the two remaining Acclamator-class Assault Ships. He hoped that his bold attack could scare them off, tricking them into thinking that Separatist reinforcements were inbound.[2]
Grievous ordered WanThir to take command of the Micah Giiett, their second-largest starship, while he sent LilVas to get more supplies from camp aurek. Grievous, Teun Mu, and TeenPat stayed on the bridge of the Demask. The Micah Giiett and Demask fought back-to-back for the final battle with remaining Republic naval forces. However, the former was quickly damaged, and an ion bomb knocked their shields offline for a minute. They would've been destroyed were it not for a sacrifice by LilVas, which bought WanThir's crew time to get their shields back up.[2]
Later, both ships were forced to disengage and go further into the planet's gravity well, which Sadiya Keldon interpreted as a trap, trying to lure her ships downward so that that could be surrounded by incoming Separatist reinforcements. As Grievous had hoped, Keldon retreated, and the Separatists took control of Bandomeer.[2]
Cleanup in Liznob Bot
Babteer Pil began to retake the planet, and once their Separatist reinforcements arrived, very late that night, they were able to mount an attack against the remaining Republic outposts. WanThir, Grievous, and TeenPat went for Liznob Bot, a town close to Selbar which was acted as one of the bigger Republic strongholds. They seized it in a day, leaving enough time for the Babteer Pil to attend the conclusion of the Selbar Babteer's victory over the Liznob Bot Padneen. Grievous spoke briefly at the event and received an ovation from the crowd.[2]
WanThir told Grievous that he was thankful for what the Separatists did, but he did not want to fight for them offworld. Instead, he decided to focus on helping his people rebuild. TeenPat did decide to join Grievous.[2]
Grievous then spoke with Count Dooku, who was surprised by how successful Grievous had been. As a result, Grievous was awarded command of the upcoming Operation Durge's Lance.[2]
Cybernetic Construction
Grievous used LX-42 cybernetic arms, and all of his limbs were reliant on NDS converters to turn his nervous system's signals into commands that a machine could execute.[2] The cybernetics were maintained by his personal cyberneticist, Chiv Dol. They also had automated repair subroutines, which Grievous could control with his mind. It also included an internal comlink that could be turned on using his Cybernetic Brain Implants. His life-support systems included about 10 minutes of oxygen, allowing him to survive in space or underwater for a short time.[2] Grievous also required his mask to see properly. The crash damaged his eyes, so he was nearsighted without the lenses in his mask.[2]
Personality and Traits
Early in the war, Grievous had a brute-force approach to warfare, throwing his vast armies at the enemy without much thought, and relished the chance to personally slay enemies on the front lines. He also loathed the idea of draws seeing warfare as only about winning.[2] Via his challenges on Bandomeer, he became a wiser tactician, defeating enemies with his wits and not just his skills with a lightsaber, as well as learning how to cut his losses when needed.[2]
Despite his frequent reliance on them, Grievous was not particularly fond of the Droid Army, even his IG-100 MagnaGuards, whom he gave mumuu wrappings by which to mock them, comparing them to his Izvoshra, whom he saw as more cunning. He had more respect for the organic soldiers in his service, particularly the Babteer Pil following their efforts in the Battle of Bandomeer.[2]
Grievous struggled with understanding his own identity, and wondered if his feats (particularly killing Jedi) could be attributed to himself or to his cybernetics. He also wondered if his Cybernetic Brain Implants contained false memories.[2] Grievous saw little purpose in anything other than killing Jedi, and he lamented his lack of wealth, prestige, honor, friends, or family.[2]
