Biography

Infiltrating Byss

By 3 ABY, Hoole had joined the Rebel Alliance together with his wards Zak and Tash Arranda. Escaping from Hoth in the Shroud, they received a distress signal from the Keefe's Needle, which had ended up in the Hoth system after a series of erratic hyperspace jump. On the ship, they found Melia Keefe and her children Lora and Pameen dead, killed by droch parasites. Realizing that the Keefes had won tickets to Byss in the Imperial Lottery, Hoole and the Arrandas sterilized the ship and used it to infiltrate Byss, taking on the identities of the Keefe family.[2]

Service to Palpatine

By 4 ABY, eight months after the battle of Endor, Hoole had been lured or forced back into Palpatine's service on Byss, while Zak and Tash were living in the city surrounding the Emperor's Citadel, apparently unaware of their earlier purpose in infiltrating Byss. Hoole acted as assistant and handler for Borborygmus Gog, who by this point served as the Emperor's Constable of Homunculi, trapped in the body of his creature Eppon together with the souls of the Kivans whose deaths he had caused. Together with Gog, Hoole was working on a program to create new clones of Palpatine that would be able to reproduce.

When Palpatine learned that an earlier project of Gog's, Triclops, had been able to father a son, he sent Hoole to retrieve that son, Ken, in order to use him in his experiments. Hoole traveled to the DRAPAC installation on Mount Yoda on Dagobah, where he took on the shape of Zak Arranda and tried to make contact with Ken. When that failed, he took on the shape of Tash Arranda instead, and was able to lure Ken aboard the Shroud with the promise to help him find his father, Triclops. Aboard the Shroud, Hoole let Ken watch episodes of the holo series The Jedi Prince, which featured a distorted account of Ken's life and made him angry.

Planning to bring Triclops to Palpatine in addition to Ken, Hoole took Ken to Yavin IV, from where they tracked Triclops and the false Kadann to Krylon and then to Space Station Scardia. En route to Scardia, however, Ken saw Hoole in his true form, and Hoole locked him in a storage closet. On Scardia, Hoole attempted to capture Triclops, but was captured by the false Kadann instead and trapped in a cage designed to hold shapeshifters. When Grand Admiral Makati bombarded the space station, Hoole escaped from his cage, transformed into a rancor, and bit off Triclops' head moments before the room was opened to vacuum. On his way to the Shroud, he picked up a boy he thought was Ken, but who turned out to be an apprentice Prophet of the Dark Side called Locor. Hoping to placate Palpatine for his failure to bring Ken, Hoole preserved Triclops' head after the fashion of the B'omarr monks and sent it to Byss. He dropped Locor off at the nearest spaceport and rejoined his old friend Arhul Hextrophon on Mount Yoda, hoping for the New Republic to shield him from Palpatine's wrath.

Return to the New Republic

When Jeng Droga attacked the DRAPAC facility, Hoole was convinced that Droga had been sent after him. In fact, Droga was there to find out what had happened to Cronal at the battle of Mindor from Lorz Geptun, whom he killed. When Droga cracked the foundations of the DRAPAC installation, causing Mount Yoda to erupt, Hoole and Hextrophon fled to a shuttle. Encountering Droga on the landing pad, Hoole was about to surrender to him, planning to bring Hextrophon along to Byss, when Luke Skywalker intervened and spirited Hoole and Hextrophon away before Hoole could give himself away.[2]
