Vengeance (Vengeance-class)
Vengeance is an existing Vengeance-class Super Star Destroyer from Legends.[1]
History
Construction
Vengeance was constructed at the Kuat shipyards in the years after the Battle of Yavin, with funding provided by Ardus Kaine. It had the same length but only three-fifth's the mass of an Executor-class Super Star Destroyer, as a result of its narrower profile. Thanks to heavy automation, it also required only half the crew of an Executor-class vessel.[2]
War council at Annaj
In 4 ABY, two days after the Battle of Endor, the Vengeance was already in the Annaj system when the remnants of the Imperial fleet arrived from Endor. Inquisitor Jerec called a war council in a meeting room aboard Vengeance, which resulted in the splintering of the Imperial fleet. For a short while, Vengeance was threatened with destruction by Admiral Harrsk's Ilthmar's Fist if Jerec did not allow Harrsk to leave.[3]
Mission to Ruusan
In 5 ABY, Vengeance was in orbit above Ruusan when Grand Admiral Thrawn arrived aboard Grey Wolf to win the Noghri's loyalty from Jerec. Thrawn confronted Jerec in the Vengeance's foremost hangar bay. In trying to convince the Noghri in his own entourage as well as those suborned by Jerec that Thrawn, rather than Jerec, was the legitimate heir to Darth Vader, Thrawn employed a squadron of TIE Phantoms loaned to him by Grand Admiral Makati for this mission. The cloaked fighters harassed Vengeance in response to Thrawn's signals, targeting the central and starboard engine sections, the primary sensor emplacement aft of the bridge, the largest bank of turbolasers along Vengeance's flank, its main hangar bay, and the bridge shield generators. Eventually one cloaked fighter flew into the forward hangar to assist Thrawn, who was being tortured with Force lightning by Jerec. Simultaneously, Captain Niriz aboard Grey Wolf moved to engage Vengeance, even though Grey Wolf was still clearly outgunned. Before the ships could exchange fire, however, the conflict in the hangar bay concluded in Thrawn's favor, and Thrawn returned to Grey Wolf with all the Noghri. Jerec, having sustained a leg injury, agreed to keep Thrawn's presence secret and returned his focus to tapping the powers of the Valley of the Jedi.
Captain Sysco of Vengeance, who had tried to hail Grey Wolf during the TIE Phantom attacks, received a private transmission from Captain Niriz after the conflict was over. Asked whether he had volunteered to serve under Jerec, who at this point was headed planetside in a shuttle, Sysco replied noncommittally. Niriz informed him that Ysanne Isard, who wanted Vengeance for herself, would send a fleet to capture it shortly, and recommended that Sysco surrender and forswear his previous allegiance to Jerec. Sysco replied he would take it under consideration.[2]
Capture and repair
Vengeance was subsequently captured by a fleet sent by Isard under the command of Grand Admiral Makati. At the time Makati arrived in the Ruusan system, Jerec had already been killed on Ruusan and Captain Sysco was ready to surrender. Vengeance was brought to the Bilbringi shipyards for repairs, where Isard visited the ship together with Grand Admiral Grant. Isard agreed to retain Sysco as captain of Vengeance for the time being, as he was familiar with the vessel's unique systems. Grant suggested to Isard that the Vengeance be used to sterilize a Rebel world as a demonstration of power as soon as repairs were completed.[2]
Battle of Etti IV
When Isard ordered Grant to support Grand Admiral Afsheen Makati in his mission to capture a number of Rebel leaders on Etti IV, Grant transferred his flag to Vengeance and took her across Warlord Zsinj's territory accompanied by the star destroyers Oriflamme and Implacable. At the Battle of Etti IV, Vengeance and Oriflamme destroyed a New Republic Mon Calamari cruiser immediately after their arrival. Soon after, Grant transferred back to Oriflamme for a spontaneous mission to Orron III, informing Grand Admiral Makati that he was placing Vengeance at his disposal and had ordered Captain Sysco to defer to him. However, when New Republic reinforcements arrived at Etti IV, Sysco deserted and took Vengeance to parts unknown after sustaining only superficial damage.[2]
