Despot's Dream is a fan fiction novel written by HandofThrawn45 (also known as Gregory O. Scott) and is the second book of the Despot Trilogy. It was first published on fanfiction.net on February 9, 2024. The novel takes place circa 25180 BBY and centers around Xim the Despot.

Synopsis

Millennia before the Empire or the Sith, there was Xim the Despot. After two decades of warfare, Xim is on the brink of conquering all humanity, but his enemies are far from vanquished. Indrexu, the Queen of Ranroon, mounts fierce opposition to his invasion, while his allies have grown weary of endless wars. And on the opposite side of his empire, the promise of riches is shadowed by rumor of a vast and powerful alien civilization beyond the frontier.

Meanwhile, the two Jedi hiding in Xim's empire are at a crossroads. Essan decides to join Indrexu's fight against Xim, while Erakas is driven by spiritual crisis to seek out a new and enigmatic teacher. Both must prepare for a trial that will test not only them, but the Force itself.

Development

Gregory O. Scott developed Despot's Dream as part of the Despot Trilogy, combining two major ideas. The first was to tell the story of the rise and fall of Xim the Despot, a figure lightly sketched in various Expanded Universe stories and supplemental materials, leaving much room for creative embellishment. The second was to depict the birth of the Jedi Order on Ossus.

While Despot's Reign introduced a new setting and characters with a compact plot, Despot's Dream expands the story, introducing new characters, conflicts, and worlds while exploring the earliest era of Star Wars history. Scott continues to draw inspiration from Dawn of the Jedi, Knights of the Old Republic, and Michael Kogge’s Despotica, but aims to create a story that stands apart from most Star Wars works that can be enjoyed without prior EU knowledge.[1]
