The Shadow War is a fan fiction novel written by HandofThrawn45 (also known as Gregory O. Scott). It was first published on fanfiction.net on April 10, 2022. Set in 23 ABY, the story follows Leia Organa Solo as she navigates a chaotic New Republic election disrupted by an assassination.
Synopsis
It has been four years since the treaty was signed between the Empire and the New Republic. The galaxy is enjoying the fruits of its new peace, and Republic Chief of State Leia Organa Solo is finally leaving politics. However, trouble is brewing in the fragile Republic. On the world of Bavinyar, conflict between human settlers and repopulated aliens is being exacerbated by a mysterious firebrand. As the election to replace Leia draws near, her political opponents see the Bavinyar situation as the perfect opportunity to cripple her allies and advance their own agenda. This time, the Republic's greatest enemy is not the Evil Empire, but the divisions within itself, and those divisions threaten to split everything and everyone apart.
Development
Gregory O. Scott conceived The Shadow War as a Star Wars political thriller aimed at addressing a lingering question in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe: how Borsk Fey’lya ascended to the leadership of the New Republic. The result is a complex story of conspiracies and betrayals, weaving together various elements from Star Wars Legends lore.
Scott initially completed the novel in 2019 but delayed its release for multiple reasons. The story’s focus on political maneuvering and a main cast comprised largely of original characters and lesser-known Star Wars figures marked a departure from the usual tone of Star Wars fiction. Additionally, Scott was concerned about potential comparisons to contemporary American political events. Despite these hesitations, he ultimately decided to release the novel following requests from readers, making some adjustments to tighten the narrative and resolve loose plot threads.
