Prologue: Specter of the Past

The novel opens with Jaina Solo waking from a recurring, disturbing dream of a monstrous, possessive entity grasping a vibrant planet, a dream she keeps secret from Jagged Fel and struggles to reconcile with her current peaceful life, which she feels the Force is trying to disrupt. She finds solace in a quiet moment with her father, Han Solo, who is enjoying a newfound hobby of cooking and reflecting on their seemingly normal, settled lives, though an underlying tension about Ben and Tahiri's mission and the lingering shadow of Jacen Solo remains. Simultaneously, in an unnamed star system, Chell Radek, an aging X-wing pilot, joins a diverse squadron of veteran pilots on a mission to engage hidden Yuuzhan Vong remnants within a gas giant's moon. Despite initial struggles and heavy casualties among his squadron members, Radek, fueled by a desire for vengeance for past losses, makes a final, desperate attack, sacrificing himself to damage a Yuuzhan Vong shuttle.

Chapter One

The Millennium Falcon arrives at Hapes, where Jaina Solo and Jagged Fel are greeted by Tenel Ka Djo, Zekk, his fiancée Taryn Zel, and Allana Solo Djo. Tthe group discusses the upcoming wedding of Zekk and Taryn, leading to separate bachelor and bachelorette parties. Jag, Zekk, Tesar, and Lowbacca attend a rowdy cantina on Junction Station where Lowbacca reveals he's going to be a father, which devolves into a bar brawl that Zekk ultimately resolves using his authority as a Hapan security official. Concurrently, Jaina, Tenel Ka, and Taryn enjoy a more subdued evening at the palace, discussing their lives, Tenel Ka's role as Queen Mother, and Allana's future, with Jaina also learning of Lowbacca's impending fatherhood from a surprised Tenel Ka.

Chapter Two

Ben Skywalker and Tahiri Veila are on a mission on Tatooine, staking out Mos Eisley Cantina, a place of historical significance for Ben's father, Luke Skywalker. While waiting for their target, Therman Traygo, an Aqualish courier, Ben and Tahiri discuss their mission and share personal reflections on Tatooine and their pasts. When Traygo finally appears, he meets with a mysterious, human woman in a nearby alley. Ben and Tahiri attempt to apprehend them, but the woman kills Traygo and then uses a blinding device to escape, leaving Ben momentarily disoriented. Ben quickly regains his focus and, using the Force, tracks the fleeing woman towards the spaceport, with Tahiri close behind.

Chapter Three

At the wedding celebration, Jagged Fel successfully hides his brawl injuries while observing the guests, including a poignant dance between Luke Skywalker and Tenel Ka that subtly reveals their shared grief for lost loved ones. Later, at a family table, Allana Djo expresses her desire to begin Jedi training at Shedu Maad and visit the old Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4, a suggestion that causes palpable tension for Jaina and Tenel Ka due to its association with painful memories, particularly Jacen Solo. Simultaneously, Jag receives an urgent message from Imperial Head of State Vitor Reige about mysterious artifacts found near the Unknown Regions, compelling Jag to leave for an investigation and hinting at a potential joint mission to Yavin 4 for Jaina and the others, despite her clear reluctance.
