In the Unknown Regions, two mysterious fleets are clashing, and the new Wraith Squadron is sent to investigate. What they find will threaten to restart the worst war in galactic history.

Synopsis

On Hapes, Zekk gets married to Taryn Zel. During the reception, Allana Solo, upon reuniting with her aunt Jaina Solo, suggests that she, her mother, Jaina, Lowbacca, Zekk, and Taryn on a expedition to examine Yavin IV, which has been abandoned since its Jedi Temple's destruction during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

Meanwhile, Ben Skywalker and Tahiri Veila have gone to Tatooine to investigate a transaction that Luke believes could trace back to the Sith. The two of them ambush their quarries, but the buyer, Miranda Fardreamer, kills the seller, Traygo, and absconds with a datapad. She reaches her ship, and they pursue her, resulting in a dogfight where both vehicles crash in the Dune Sea.

Meanwhile in the Unknown Regions, a battle is brewing between a mysterious Yuuzhan Vong fleet and a group of formerly GA vehicles acquired on the black market by those hoping to continue the Bothan policy of ar'krai. Their battles are investigated by a coalition of Imperials and Wraith Squadron.

After some moments to reminisce on Yavin IV, the Jedi are ambushed by a voxyn, who injures Lowbacca before running away to Exar Kun's Temple. The Jedi send Allana away with the Hapan Royal Guard before chasing the voxyn. On the way, they encounter Ship hidden in the jungle.

Prologue: Specters of the Past

The novel begins with a description of a distant planet adorned with lush greenery, deep blues, and wispy clouds set against the vast expanse of space. However, this scene is disrupted by the emergence of two luminous lights resembling eyes, which gradually form a menacing face enveloping the planet. The face declares ownership over the world with the word "Mine," causing the planet to wither and decay in its grasp. This eerie imagery sets the stage for the protagonist, Jaina Solo, who is haunted by recurring nightmares of this unsettling vision.

Jaina awakens from her slumber aboard the Millennium Falcon, finding solace in the corridors of the ship. She reflects on her family's storied history, including the love between her parents, Han Solo and Leia Organa, and the tumultuous events they've faced together. Despite finding happiness in her marriage to Jag, Jaina is tormented by the persistent nightmares, which hint at deeper anxieties and unresolved conflicts within herself and the galaxy at large.

A conversation between Jaina and Han provides insight into their relationship dynamics and the current state of affairs in the galaxy. They discuss Jag's involvement with Emperor Reige, reflecting on the complexities of post-war governance and the challenges of maintaining stability in a volatile political landscape. The absence of Jaina's cousin, Ben, and Tahiri further underscores the lingering tensions and uncertainties within their family and broader community.

As Han departs to attend to ship duties, Jaina is left to contemplate her thoughts, finding a sense of peace amidst the lingering shadows of her nightmares. This introspective moment sets the stage for Jaina's journey as she grapples with her past, navigates the complexities of the present, and confronts the uncertain future that lies ahead.

In a star system devoid of a proper name, Chell Radek embarks on a mission with a squadron of fellow pilots from various starships. Their objective is to confront a hidden enemy fleet lurking near a gas giant. As they approach their target, tension mounts among the pilots, many of whom are seasoned veterans of past conflicts, haunted by memories of war and loss.

Despite initial uncertainty about the enemy's whereabouts, reconnaissance reports reveal their presence near the gas giant's second moon. The squadron coordinates with their base ship, Sunbeam, and the flagship, Phoenix, as they prepare to engage the enemy forces.

As the squadron advances, they encounter waves of Yuuzhan Vong coralskippers emerging from the moon's icy depths. The ensuing dogfight is intense, with Radek and his wingmen struggling to keep pace with their agile adversaries. Amidst the chaos, tragedy strikes as one of their own, Teve Devroolan, falls victim to enemy fire, leaving Radek reeling with grief. Determined to avenge his fallen comrade, Radek presses on, guided by his squadron leader, Sovel Greepth. Despite facing overwhelming odds, he remains resolute in his mission, unleashing a barrage of firepower against the enemy shuttle. In a final, desperate maneuver, he sacrifices himself in a fiery explosion, determined to inflict as much damage as possible upon the enemy.
