Plot summary

Part One

Jedi Master A’Sharad Hett, on a reconnaissance mission on the ocean planet of Bavinyar, witnesses the execution of his partner, Master Jafer Torles, by their own clone commandos. Stunned, Hett realizes a galactic Jedi purge is underway which is confirmed to him by a surge of death in the Force. He kills one clone using his masters lightsaber before fleeing the camp to survive and uncover the reason behind this betrayal.

Meanwhile, Captain Jereveth Syne and her father, Admiral Gregor Syne of the Bavinyar Defense Force, receive an urgent report: General Grievous is dead, and the Jedi have attempted a coup against Chancellor Palpatine. Palpatine has declared himself Emperor and demands immediate surrender from all Separatist systems. An Imperial Navy fleet led by Vice Admiral Octavian Grant jumps into the system, jamming communications and demanding the planet's surrender, effectively ending Bavinyar's brief alliance with the Confederacy.

Vice Admiral Grant initiates an attack, commanding his forces to concentrate their firepower on the Trade Federation's control ship guarding the planet. The battle for control of Bavinyar is officially underway.

Part Two

Master A’Sharad Hett is ambushed by Clone Troopers, including the soldiers Ebron and Sands, following the execution of Order 66. Hett kills two clones in a swift attack and then uses a feint to eliminate the remaining three. During the fight, Hett confronts the dying clone Ebron, who reveals the Jedi Council's supposed attempted coup against Chancellor Palpatine. This revelation confirms Hett's belief that the Clone Wars was orchestrated for the sole purpose of exterminating the Jedi.

Seeking to find other survivors, Hett steals a Z-95 Headhunter from a Bavinyari air base. He witnesses the destruction of the Separatist control ship and the subsequent arrival of the now Galactic Empire. Finding no response on the Jedi emergency channel, Hett flees with a group of Bavinyari ships. He manages to land his ship inside the hangar of a fleeing dreadnaught, the Iconoclast, where he is taken prisoner by the crew.

Vice Admiral Grant leads the former Republic fleet in destroying the last major Separatist vessels and issues an ultimatum for unconditional surrender. Separatist Admiral Jereveth Syne on the dreadnaught Iconoclast attempts to contact her father, whose ship, the Independence, is being targeted. Gregor Syne tells his daughter to run and find allies. The Independence is then destroyed in a explosion as it rams an assault carrier.

Following her father's death, Jereveth Syne assumes command and broadcasts a message to the remaining Bavinyari forces telling them to surrender while declaring her intent to take her remaining ships and flee to find allies to later liberate their world.

The story concludes with Jereveth Syne visiting the captured Jedi, A’Sharad Hett. She recognizes their shared enemy and Hett offers his services to fight the Empire. Syne agrees and cuts Hett's bonds forging an improbable alliance between a surviving Jedi and a former Separatist Admiral.
