Biography

Constructing the Death Star hyperdrives

Ranth helped construct the hyperdrives for both Death Stars, breaking new ground in hyperphysics in order to allow the massive battle stations to enter and travel through hyperspace. Ranth's chief insight, in his own view, was to see hyperspace not as a dimension of speed but as a separate realm underlying reality―hence his insistence on calling the transition to hyperspace "dropping" rather than "accelerating." He also identified hyperspace with the Chaos or afterlife.

Involvement with the Church of the Dark Side

At some point prior to 5 ABY, Mahd Windcaller inducted Ranth into the Church of the Dark Side, in which she held the rank of Adept. As an Acolyte, Ranth eagerly soaked up the contradictory revelations offered at each step in the initiation process. In 5 ABY, still as an Acolyte, Ranth wanted to induct his younger colleague Stinna Draesinge Sha into the Church. After bringing her to the First Church of the Dark Side on Coruscant, however, Windcaller showed Ranth a transmission from Gornash, one of the false Prophets of the Dark Side, ordering him to Kuat to help make the damaged Eclipse hyperspaceworthy. Ranth departed for Kuat immediately, leaving Draesinge Sha behind.

Service on Byss

From Kuat, Ranth was soon delivered to Byss to aid the Emperor in developing new superweapons. In the Emperor's Citadel, he witnessed Palpatine's attempt to imbue three selected soldiers with the dark side of the Force by blasting them with Force lightning. Only one of the soldiers survived and was given the new name Baddon Fass. Fascinated with the procedure, Ranth concluded that Force lightning was no mere discharge of energy, but the Chaos itself leaking into reality.[2]

Personality and traits

From early on, Ranth was always looking for deeper mysteries behind the surface of reality. This made him an easy mark for the Church of the Dark Side, which promised new mind-bending insights at each new layer of their initiation process.

Ranth was infatuated with Mahd Windcaller, who inducted him into the Church of the Dark Side. However, he always felt inferior to her and wanted to rise high enough within the Church to be worthy of her attention.[2]

Behind the scenes

The apparent conflict between Ranth's vocation as a hyperspace physicist and his role as the Emperor's physician has been reconciled in Empire of Ashes by Ranth's identification of hyperspace with the Chaos, which makes knowledge of hyperphysics relevant to Palpatine's health after passing through the Chaos multiple times.[2]
