Dark Lord of the Sith
"Dark Lady of the Sith" redirects here. For other uses of "Dark Lord", please see the disambiguation page.
The Dark Lord of the Sith (often shortened to "Dark Lord") was the head of the Sith Order. Often, the Dark Lord would also serve as head of state for the Sith Empire. Many, but not all, had a chief lieutenant and enforcer called a Shadow Hand.
Dark Lords often came to power by killing their predecessors in a display of strength. However, others were appointed to the role, most often during the few times in galactic history in which a tangible Sith state existed. The power of the Dark Lord was tied to both the ancient role of the King of the Sith as well as the Sith'ari prophecy.
Though the title was considered to be gender neutral, a female Dark Lord would often be referred to as "Dark Lady".
