A joint fleet exercise involving elements from the Galactic Alliance Navy and various local defense forces took place in Axum system near Anaxes in 37 ABY.[1]

Background

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the New Republic's navy had fractured. To avoid anything like this happening again, Galactic Alliance command decided to hold a joint fleet exercise to enable their units and those of the local defense fleets to work cohesively.[1]

The exercise

Admiral Pellaeon was given command of the offensive side, directing his side's forces from aboard Megador. Admiral Niathal led the defensive side from Guardian.

Early on during the exercise, an Imperial piloting a TIE Interceptor collided with an A-wing piloted by a Bothan. Both ships and pilots were lost, but in accordance with procedure, the exercise proceeded nonetheless.

Admiral Niathal, despite being assigned a defensive role, decided to bring Guardian in for a direct attack on Megador. Pellaeon pulled his two supporting Star Destroyers Relentless and Vindicator out of the fight, making it look as if they were damaged. When Megador and Guardian exchanged broadsides, echoing the Battle of Orinda with its slugging match between SSDs Reaper and Lusankya, Pellaeon ordered the two Star Destroyers back for an attack on Guardian's opposite flank, in a strategy inspired the New Republic's victory at the Battle of Celanon. Pellaeon's side won the simulated battle as a result.

Aftermath

Niathal apologized to Pellaeon for departing from the initial instructions, but he commended her initiative. Pellaeon also sent personal thanks to Kiles L'toth, commander of the Dornean element, and Etahn A'baht, who had been observing the battle from aboard L'toth's Charnak, as Pellaeon had learned the strategy he used to win from being defeated by A'baht at the Battle of Celanon.
