The battle of Charros was fought in 27 ABY, as a diversion by the Yuuzhan Vong for their attack on Rathalay.[1]
Background
Early in 27 ABY, the New Republic's Fifth Fleet was stationed between Yuuzhan Vong-occupied Hutt Space and the Bothan sector. Fearing a rimward thrust by the Yuuzhan Vong, Fifth Fleet command sent Task Force Cloverleaf, under the command of Commodore Syub Snunb, to Charros to intercept it. Charros IV was evacuated, and refugee ships without hyperdrives were taken on by the Endurance-class carriers Ballarat and Intrepid.[1]
The battle
Two New Republic starfighter squadrons consisting of K-wings and E-wings, Aklay Squad and Nexu Squad, deployed from Intrepid to attack the Yuuzhan Vong picket ship. Fighting their way through coralskipper squadrons, they destroyed the picket ship, allowing the New Republic's Nebula-class Star Destroyers Resolve and Thunderhead to attack the three Yuuzhan Vong cruiser analogs. They destroyed one, but another rammed Thunderhead, destroying both ships.
The last Yuuzhan Vong cruiser was destroyed before it could perform its own suicide run. The remaining coralskippers attempted suicide runs as well, successfully taking out the gunship Garland. As the battle wound down, with the New Republic forces victorious despite heavy losses, a call for help was transmitted from nearby Rathalay: the attack on Charros had been a diversion for a full invasion of Rathalay. Commodore Syub Snunb ordered the task force to Rathalay to assist in the evacuation.[1]
